Layer3D vs Figma Motion: Native Animation or a 3D Scene?
Figma Motion brings animation into the design file. Layer3D takes a design into a spatial production environment. The choice depends on whether your next step is a reusable interface animation or a dimensional video.

The short answer
Keep motion in Figma when components, libraries and developer handoff are central. Move into Layer3D when the shot calls for 3D models, geometry modifiers, scene lighting, camera direction or a ready-made video template.

| Compare | Layer3D | Figma Motion |
|---|---|---|
| What is being compared | Layer3D Studio and its Figma import workflow. | Native Figma Motion within Figma Design, not a third-party plugin. |
| Starting point | Import a Layer3D export prepared by the Figma plugin. | Animate layers in the existing Figma file. |
| Timeline | Scene tracks, clips, keyframes and built-in animation options. | Native timeline, keyframes, auto-keyframe and playback controls. |
| Reusable motion | Adapt scene animation or start with a suitable video template. | Reuse motion within animated components and animation styles. |
| Design-system context | An imported scene is a separate production artifact. | Motion stays alongside Figma components, variables and libraries. |
| 3D production | Models, editable geometry, modifiers, materials, lights and cameras. | Evaluate current canvas and shader features separately from a dedicated 3D scene workflow. |
| Media replacement | Replace template imagery or video while keeping its scene and motion. | Keep media and motion in the design file; the reusable setup depends on the file. |
| Text and audio | Coordinate text and audio within the scene’s timeline workflow. | Current Motion releases include text animation and timeline audio. |
| Developer handoff | Rendered media is the focus of this comparison. | Dev Mode and MCP provide animation context; plan and seat conditions apply. |
| Video and images | Video and PNG sequences, including Pro 1080p, 2K, 4K and up to 60 fps. | MP4, WebM, GIF and animated SVG; current releases also add supported Lottie export. |
| Best evaluation task | A Figma-derived 3D product shot or a personalized template video. | A component animation or brand asset that should remain native to Figma. |

Figma Motion is more than Smart Animate
This comparison concerns the native Figma Motion product. It is not a comparison with an older animation plugin or only with prototype transitions. Figma’s Motion timeline documentation describes keyframes, automatic keyframe recording and playback controls. Those are substantive motion-authoring capabilities.
Figma Motion is currently described as open beta. Availability and limits can change. In particular, older comparisons can miss newer export options: the September 30, 2026 release notes add reusable animation styles, audio, text animation and supported Lottie export. A fair choice starts with the version available today.
One design file or a separate production scene?
Figma Motion’s strongest starting point is continuity. The design is already in Figma, so animating it does not require a transfer into another editor. That can be valuable for a product team whose discussions, components and library updates already happen there. See Figma’s Motion product overview.
Layer3D introduces a separate scene because the production goal changes. A Figma composition becomes material for a spatial shot: the design can be arranged with models, lights, materials and a moving camera. Import is a production step, so inspect visual fidelity and editable elements before you start directing the scene.
Choose the native route when remaining in the shared design file is a requirement. Choose a separate scene when its additional controls contribute to the final image. Moving a simple component animation into a 3D editor solely to export a video may add work without improving the result.
When a 3D scene changes the result
Consider a phone reveal. A flat representation may be enough if the purpose is to explain a sequence of screens. A spatial production becomes useful when the camera moves around the device, the housing catches light or several objects need to share a convincing sense of depth.
Layer3D provides model import, geometry modifiers, editable materials, scene lights and camera controls. These are useful when the form and its relationship to the camera are part of the creative idea. A modifier can change the shape that is being animated, rather than only the position of an image.
Do not reduce this decision to a blanket claim that Figma can or cannot create a dimensional-looking effect. Canvas transforms and shaders can produce compelling visuals. The practical question is whether the job needs editable scene geometry, a controlled camera and spatial lighting throughout the production.
Reusable components and reusable video shots
Figma’s Motion workflow guide places animation in the context of existing brand systems and reusable components. That is a good match for a loading indicator, an animated badge or an interface element that needs consistent behavior across product work.
Layer3D’s template workflow addresses a different kind of reuse: a finished visual setup. Select a template with the right composition, replace its images or videos, review the movement and render a personalized result. This is useful when the deliverable is a promotional video rather than a component to ship inside an application.
For recurring campaigns, decide what must remain reusable. A component needs maintainable properties and implementation context. A video template needs reliable asset slots, readable framing and an edit that survives a different headline or screenshot. Both deserve a revision test before becoming a team standard.
Video delivery and developer handoff
Figma documents CSS, React and JSON inspection, plus MCP animation context for development handoff. This can make the design file a useful reference for implementation. Generated output still needs review in the actual product, especially where interaction or responsive behavior is involved.
A Layer3D export serves a different purpose: a rendered visual that can be placed into a campaign, presentation or edited video. Its video and PNG sequence options include Pro resolutions of 1080p, 2K and 4K, with up to 60 fps. Check current Layer3D export entitlements before choosing delivery settings.
Figma Motion also exports finished animation; it is not limited to prototypes. Check the current beta and access documentation together with the newer release notes. Some higher-resolution and publishing capabilities have paid-seat requirements. Formats and access should be verified against the intended account.
Try the same launch in two forms
- Prepare one small Figma design. Use a product screen, a short headline and a simple brand mark.
- Make the native motion version. Animate the interface in Figma and assess whether its design-system and handoff context meet the brief.
- Make the spatial version. Import the design into Layer3D, place it in a device scene or suitable template and direct a restrained camera move.
- Replace the content. Use a second screenshot and a longer headline. Inspect the amount of repair required in each version.
- Compare at delivery size. Ask whether depth improves the message, whether text remains readable and whether the recipient needs media or implementation context.
This exercise separates the look of a shot from the requirements of a production. It is an evaluation method, not evidence that one editor always exports faster or produces better animation.
Compare the work you will maintain
A tool already included in the team’s workflow can be the less expensive choice even if a different tool has a lower subscription price. Account for importing assets, maintaining duplicate files, reviewing revisions and preparing the final handoff.
Conversely, a ready-made spatial template can remove setup work that is irrelevant to a one-off campaign. Compare the cost of reaching the approved result, and then of updating that result a month later. Keep the design file as the source of truth where appropriate and treat the rendered scene as a clearly identified production artifact.
Which should you choose?

| Your project | A useful starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An animated component used across a design system | Figma Motion | Native reuse and implementation context matter most. |
| A 3D device reveal using Figma screen artwork | Layer3D | The camera, device geometry and lighting are part of the shot. |
| A quick animation that should stay in the original file | Figma Motion | Avoid an unnecessary import and a second production artifact. |
| A personalized promotional video from an existing scene | Layer3D | Template media replacement matches the deliverable. |
| A product team needing both UI motion and campaign footage | Use both | Keep component behavior in Figma and produce the spatial campaign shot in Layer3D. |
Common questions
Is this comparing a Figma animation plugin?
No. It compares Layer3D with native Figma Motion in Figma Design. Plugins and Smart Animate alone are outside the scope of this article.
Can Figma Motion export video and Lottie?
Figma documents video export, and its September 30, 2026 release notes add supported Lottie export. Confirm current account access and format compatibility, especially while Motion remains in beta.
Does importing into Layer3D keep a live link to Figma?
Treat the imported scene as a separate production artifact. Do not assume that later changes in Figma automatically synchronize with it. Inspect the imported design before animation.
