Layer3D vs After Effects: From Design to Finished Video
A product launch can begin with the same Figma frame and lead to two very different productions. Layer3D takes that design into an editable 3D scene. Adobe After Effects gives it a place in a much broader motion graphics and compositing workflow.

The short answer
Choose Layer3D for a self-contained 3D product shot or a template you can personalize with your own media. Choose After Effects when footage, compositing, detailed effects work and Adobe project delivery define the job.

| Compare | Layer3D | After Effects |
|---|---|---|
| Working environment | Browser-based scene creation and animation. | Installed desktop motion graphics and compositing application. |
| Figma starting point | Import a Layer3D export from the Figma plugin, then work with the imported scene. | Prepare design assets for a composition; the transfer depends on the asset format or integration used. |
| Animation structure | Timeline, clips, keyframes and built-in animations within a 3D scene. | Composition timelines, layer properties, keyframes and expressions. |
| 3D content | Import models and build scenes with geometry, materials, cameras and lights. | Native 3D model support in Advanced 3D, alongside other composition renderers. |
| Shape changes | Advanced geometry modifiers support changes to the form itself. | Layer effects and renderer-specific 3D tools; a different model from a geometry modifier stack. |
| Replacing media | Start with a suitable template, replace its images or videos and retain the surrounding scene. | Reuse an existing project or a prepared Motion Graphics template with the controls its author exposes. |
| Footage and compositing | Scene-based visual production and post-processing. | A stronger fit for footage-heavy work, masking, keying and tracked composites. |
| Reusable delivery | A personalized scene rendered to a video or image sequence. | A rendered composition, editable project or compatible Motion Graphics template. |
| Export | Video and PNG image sequences; Pro options include 1080p, 2K, 4K and up to 60 fps. | Render Queue and Adobe Media Encoder workflows; format and codec choices depend on the delivery setup. |
| Handoff | Best evaluated as a design-to-render workflow. | Best evaluated as part of an Adobe production pipeline. |
| Practical limit | Browser resources and scene complexity affect preview and rendering. | Hardware, effects, source media and render settings affect preview and rendering. |

Begin with the deliverable
“Can it animate?” is too broad a question to choose a production tool. A ten-second phone mockup, a composited live-action advertisement and an editable project for another studio have different requirements. Establish what the client needs to receive before comparing interfaces.
If the deliverable is a finished dimensional shot, Layer3D keeps the work centered on the scene: import a design, give the composition depth, direct the camera and render the result. If the client needs an After Effects project, a specific plugin workflow or a complex composite, that requirement is a reason to use After Effects from the beginning.
Adobe positions After Effects around motion graphics and visual effects. Its breadth is an advantage when a shot needs several production techniques, rather than only a scene and a camera.
Figma import and media replacement
Layer3D provides a path from a Figma design through the Layer3D plugin export into Studio. This gives an existing interface or visual composition a starting point for animation without treating a screenshot as the only source asset. Inspect imported fonts, effects and layer relationships before building the shot; compatibility depends on the source design.
A template can shorten a different part of the process. For a device showcase, choose a template with the composition and movement you want, replace the screen artwork or video, then review its framing. You are adapting an existing shot rather than authoring its camera movement again.
After Effects can also support reusable production. Adobe’s Motion Graphics template workflow lets an author expose selected controls. A well-prepared template can be efficient; its flexibility comes from how it was built. Neither tool removes the need to check long titles, unusual aspect ratios or assets that crop differently.
Real 3D and compositing depth
After Effects is not limited to flat layers. Adobe documents native model import and an Advanced 3D renderer. Its Cinema 4D Composition Renderer also supports extruded text and shapes. The useful comparison is how you want to construct and finish the image.
Layer3D puts editable form, modifiers, materials, lighting and camera direction together in a scene-oriented workspace. That is useful when the shape of an object needs to evolve with the animation, or a design needs a spatial treatment beyond a simple layer rotation.
After Effects has the stronger case when the scene is only one ingredient. A rendered object may need to sit behind a moving actor, match footage or pass through a chain of corrections and effects. Layer3D can supply the dimensional visual, while After Effects handles that broader assembly.
Timing and repeatable production
Layer3D’s timeline and built-in animations help coordinate a short visual sequence. A productive first pass is to establish a readable opening, one main movement and a clear final frame. Refine object motion and camera motion together so they support the same visual idea.
After Effects adds a different kind of control through its expression and composition workflow. For a team already maintaining reusable compositions, changing tools may introduce more work than it removes. Compare the time needed for the second and third revision, not just the first preview.
For repeatable campaigns, separate the elements that change from those that should remain stable. The changing elements may be a screen recording, a headline and a logo. The stable elements may be the camera, lighting and timing. That distinction matters more than how many animation presets a tool includes.
A practical example: a product launch
- Define one shot. Use a short device reveal with two replacement screenshots and one final brand frame.
- Build the Layer3D version. Start from a suitable template or import the Figma composition. Replace the media, inspect its fit and adjust the shot on the timeline.
- Build the After Effects version. Start from an appropriate composition or project. Prepare its media replacements and keep any required 3D renderer or effects dependencies clear.
- Make a real revision. Replace the screenshots with different proportions and extend the headline. Compare how much repair each version requires.
- Review the exported file. Inspect small text, motion edges, cropping and the opening and closing frames at the intended viewing size.
This is a suggested evaluation, not a measured speed benchmark. The result depends on the chosen template, the author’s experience and the complexity of the shot.
Export, cost and handoff
Layer3D offers video and PNG sequence export, with Pro options for 1080p, 2K, 4K and up to 60 fps. A PNG sequence is useful when the shot will receive further work in another application. Resolution alone is not a quality guarantee: source artwork, materials, sampling and scene complexity still matter. See the current Layer3D plan and export options.
For After Effects, confirm the requested codec, color settings and project handoff with the recipient. A team needing editable compositions and Adobe dependencies has a different delivery problem from a team that only needs a finished promotional video.

| Your project | A useful starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A Figma-based 3D product or interface showcase | Layer3D | Direct design import and scene-based animation fit the brief. |
| A repeatable video using replacement images or clips | Layer3D | A suitable template keeps the composition and motion ready to adapt. |
| Live-action footage with substantial compositing | After Effects | The broader effects and compositing workflow is more relevant. |
| An editable Adobe project required by the client | After Effects | The handoff format determines the production environment. |
| A 3D shot inside a larger edited film | Use both | Render the scene in Layer3D and finish the wider composition in After Effects. |
Common questions
Can Layer3D replace After Effects?
For a focused design-to-3D video, it can be an alternative workflow. It should not be treated as a feature-for-feature replacement for every compositing, plugin or Adobe project requirement.
Does After Effects support real 3D models?
Yes. Adobe documents native model import and the Advanced 3D renderer. Describing it as a tool that only moves flat layers would be inaccurate.
Can I use the two tools together?
Yes, a rendered video or PNG image sequence can become source material for a later composition. Confirm the format, frame rate and any transparency requirements before committing to a long export.
